Introduction

Notebooks are the heart of Count. They are a powerful and flexible tool that can change the way you find and share insights with your team.

Querying Data

To start querying data you will need to create a cell.

To create a cell type // or click the Add cell button at the bottom of the notebook.

Naming cells

When you create a cell it will be given a letter as a default name. You can rename the cell to help remind yourself, and others, what each cell represents. The rules for naming cells are:

  • Cannot have any spaces
  • Must begin with a letter
  • Can only contain letters, numbers, or underscores ("_")

What can you query?

You can build a query using any of the tables/columns you see in the data bar. This includes:

  • tables from your project
  • other cells in the notebook

Input

To create a query, there are 3 options:

  1. SQL (more info here)
  2. Notebook SQL (more info here)
  3. Drag-and-Drop (more info here)

You can switch from drag and drop to SQL, but currently, you cannot switch from SQL, or Notebook SQL to Drag-and-drop.

Output

Once your query has been run successfully, you can choose how you want to view the results. This can be either as:

  • a table
  • a visual

By default, the query will return the top 3 rows of the query response.

To see more results you can:

  • Expand the cell to see the full table
  • Select to preview 10 or 20 rows in the cell menu

To create a visual with your query results, simply change the output type to Visual. Count will attempt to plot something sensible, but you can always edit the default visual to your heart's content.

Customizing Your Visual

When you do want to customize your visual, you can do so by expanding the cell.

From here you can:

  • Change the chart type (e.g. area, line, circle)
  • Change which columns are on which axis
  • Format each axis (e.g. Linear or Logarithmic axis)
  • Sort each axis (ascending or descending)

Communicating Insights

Once you have the insights you want to share you can get your notebook ready to present.

Adding Text

Anywhere in the notebook, you can add text to annotate, explain, or highlight your insights. Highlighting the text will reveal the formatting options.

You can also use some markdown shortcuts if you prefer, including:

#[space] : Header 1

##[space] : Header 2

###[space] : Header 3

-[space] : bullet point

>[space] : blockquote

``` : code block

Adding Images (& gifs)

You can also add your own external images (and .gifs) to the notebook by clicking the Add Image button at the bottom of the notebook.

You can also re-size the images once they've been inserted.

Hiding Cells

To help make your notebook more presentable, you have the option of hiding parts of the cell or the entire cell.

You can use the cell menu to select whether to hide:

  • the cell input (query)
  • output (table or visual)
  • the entire cell
